How It Started: My Professional Journey

Updated: Jan 28, 2021

In a country where educators are less paid and less recognized, where most teachers do not understand the difference between various types of curriculum and while some teachers seem to be well paid than others without any clear reasons or concrete explanation to anyone as to why it is so. After several months of researching and applying online to various top international schools in Nigeria, with lots of rejections and unsuccessful interviews leaving me confused and lost as to why it is so. Just at the point where I was about to give up, I finally landed my dream job in Lagos despite not having the right qualification for the job. I was given an opportunity to teach in an international school of repute in Lagos and was saddled with the responsibility of teaching a final year class, a completely alien curriculum to me (British curriculum). With so much encouragement from my department and support from the school in general, I was able to attain an 85% plus success rate in my students that particular year, which for me I considered a very great success since the curriculum was something I was just getting familiar with.

Being a passionate educator, I took my time in the three years I worked in the school to understand the context and delivery of the curriculum. I did this by attending workshops, seminars, in-house seminars as well as online training related to the curriculum which for me was one great experience I would never forget as I was exposed to a lot of teaching materials, methodologies, websites, online tools as well as opportunities of meeting and sharing ideas with various educators around the globe.

In 2019, I finally decided to leave the shores of Nigeria, to share my ideas and experience I have gained over time as well as the opportunity to learn and meet with students and teachers of different educational and cultural backgrounds. This further exposed me to how education is being perceived, learned, and taught to students outside of my geographical zone [Africa]. I am currently having my second international experience in a different school and country, although still as a teacher but definitely with a different approach and style of teaching and learning.

One of my major philosophies of education is that teaching should be student-centered and as such, I make my students take charge of their own learning while I act as a facilitator of the learning process, implementing and strategizing the best form and approach to delivering my lessons.

Note To Self: Never Give Up! You are one step away.
